Crustaceans produce from eggs, which have been fertilized by sperm. The eggs can take several days, or weeks, to hatch, depending on the species. Crustaceans cannot grow like other animals because of their hard outer shell. Periodically, the shed the shell, grow a little and then grow another hard outer skeleton. Whilst this growing is taking place, they must hide to protect themselves.
