The shark has the greatest electric sensitivity known in animals. It has small points in the head that can detect electricity. This sense is used to detect nerve impulses and thus find prey hidden in the sand on the sea-bottom. Sometimes, this sense confuses sharks as it can sense not only prey but predators, people or boats, from up to a mile away. Occasionally, when the metal of a boat interacts with the salt water, sharks can get confused into launching an attack on the boat.
Another sense, called the ‘lateral line’ is found in most fish, including sharks. This sense can detect sound or motion in the water. This sense is used by sharks to detect other organisms moving and they can ‘hear’ frequencies in the range of 25-50HZ.
The Shark's most acute sense is that of smell. This sense is so strong in Sharks that they can detect prey through smell alone.
