Salmon are surely amongst the most hardworking fish to be found. They are born in fresh water, migrate to the oceans and then return to the fresh water to reproduce. They live in the Atlantic & Pacific oceans, as well as the Great Lakes and other lakes. When the salmon migrate to the ocean, they will remain there for about two or three years, until they are fully mature. Only when they are mature, will they then begin the daunting journey back to their native stream. How they find their way back to their place of birth is a mystery. When they arrive there, they will breed, spawn and then, in order to complete their cycle, they must die.
Salmon are under threat from extreme weather conditions which produce floods. This can wash away their spawning gravel. Additionally, landslides can block rivers and volcanic eruptions can destroy entire rivers.
