When a female dolphin is giving birth, several other dolphins will surround her to protect her and the newborn dolphin from shark attacks. They also swim together as a group and guide the newborn dolphin to the surface of the water for its first breath of air.
They give birth. after a 12 month gestation period. The newborn dolphins are nourished from their mothers milk for up to 9 months. Young Dolphins reach maturity by around 8 years of age and become able to breed at the age of 8 years. The female dolphin will have one baby each year until she stops breeding at about 14 years of age.
