Dolphins often leap above the water surface, performing acrobatics and they rarely stay underwater for longer than a few minutes. Although they can dive down as far as 250 metres and can stay down for up to fifteen minutes, they rarely do so. Their acrobatic behaviour above water is usually seen as ´playing´. A favourite pastime for dolphins is to follow in the wake of boats, enjoying the waves.
Dolphins are famous for their human interaction. They will often approach people and ´play´ with them in the water. There are also many stories of dolphins circling people to protect them from sharks.
Dolphins do not sleep but they take frequent rests on the surface of the water. These rests or naps usually last for 2 – 8 minutes, depending on whether it is day or night.
Believed to be the most intelligent of all animals, Dolphins can be taught how to perform certain actions. They learn best through a system of reward.
